Inspiring people

As some of you may know, in the past two weeks we have been learning about inspiring people like Mahatma Gandi, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King.We have been told to study are own Inspiring person. Me and Sophie have been learning about the famous Oprah Winfrey and her charities all over South Africa and towards animal cruelty. By Molly

Inspiring People

This week we are learning to take notes about inspiring people like Nelson Mandela, Martain Luther King and people like that. Here are some ideas for some people if they don't have a person Bob Parker, Steve Erwin, Opra, Mother Teresa, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and people like that. They have to be in by Monday 28th March so the people who don't have a person hurry. Next week we are highlighting things that are important about your person sort of like taking notes.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa on July 18, 1918. His father was Chief Henry Mandela of the Tembu Tribe. Mandela himself was educated at University College of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand and qualified in law in 1942. He joined the African National Congress in 1944 and was engaged in resistance against the ruling National Party's apartheid policies after 1948. He went on trial for treason in 1956-1961 and was acquitted in 1961.We had to write a paragraph about him and his lifeby sophie

INSPIRING PEOPLE

In class we have been learning about INSPIRING PEOPLE. I asked the question what/who is an inspiring person. Some of the childrens ideas were

• Someone who is GENEROUS
• A person who makes people what to do something.
• A person who creates change - positive.
• A person who overcomes obstacles and works to benefit others
• Someone who thinks about others over themselves.

We have looked at Dr Seuss and Mahatma Gandhi in class. Last week I noticed the children were amazed at the concept of segregation and the civil rights movements of the 1960s.
Today we looked at the life briefly of Martin Luther King, the children found him inspirational but the concept that because of the colour of your skin you had to sit in certain areas away from others as ridiculous.

The children need to choose an inspirationl person to research and learn about. Some children have already started to collect their information, many thanks for this support. As libraries are closed, I have asked children to explore the internet at home and to ensure they write the website down as each child will create a bibliography of their resources.
If you are unable to print, please email your child's resources to me and I will print it out.

Homework

As we return to normality, the children will be receiving homework. Each night the children should go on to Mathletics for 20minutes, practise their Spelling words and also read for 10-20 minutes.

In Maths, the children have been learning about graphs and probability. It would be wise to encourage your children to go on Statistics, Addition/Subtraction, or Multiplication/Division for Mathletics. Children can sometimes explore other areas, however these areas are being taught in class.

The children in Room 3 have been taking home journals this week. In our reading, we have been focusing on fluency (smooth reading and not reading like a robot) and retelling what we have read. READING for MEANING. If you feel your child is a fluent reader, you may not need to listen to them read. Yet put aside some time for your child to explain and retell the story to you.
This could be initiated from you asking questions like "Who are the characters in the story?" "Why was the book called...?" and "What did ... do in the story?"
The journals are short but the focus is on the children gaining greater understanding of what they have read.

Room 3 News

First Edition of the Room 3 News:

The children in Room 3 will be recording some clips for Room 3 news each week. Children will have a chance to be a reporter and presenter, however it is given to those children who are working extremely well in class and completing all work in the set time.

Molly and Sophie had a chance to write a report about the Earthquake. The girls sing the "Toilet Song".  A song about when you should flush the toilet. I hope this does not offend anyone, but this is from a child's perspective with no adult input.

It was a good job in a short time.

Touch

On Friday the 18th of March the Raptors played touch and Jonty scored lots of tries and Zanthe scored one. Lucy touched a boy right before he was going to score. At the end of the game Lucy got player of the day. And we won, it was very exciting. Then we had the disco with sausages and drinks of coke. We had to go inside because it was time for prizegiving. We all got medals and we got one big trophy, it was really awesome. Lucy, Alice and Nick played a game of touch with Mr A, and Mr A kept on grabbing us and tackling us even though it was supposed be touch. It was a great day, and we had FUN!!

Inspiring People

Dr.Seuss is an inspiring person because he got children to read books. Back in the past the books were terrible. He is a good children's author. Dr.Seuss tells people in his books, be respectful and not mean and respect the environment.

Gandhi is an inspiring person because he lived long enough to have his dream become a reality, so it is like you can have a dream no matter what your age. He wanted a change of rule in India and to reduce/abolish discrimnation. No matter what colour makes a difference to the world.

This is my big sister Kate's bunny Sugar. We got her on the 20th of January from the S.P.C.A and we have loved her for nearly 2 months. She is so spoilt!!! She goes under the deck all the time when we let her out for a run around. We fence off all of our yard to stop her getting out as she goes out for a couple of runs every day. We feed her pellets, carrots, apples, celery, hay and treats. Here are some pictures of her.

This week we have been learning about different ways how we worship God. We all shared our ideas and wrote them all on the board here are a few.......

Public Worship... by God's people, using the official prayers of the church is callled a liturgy.God is present in a special way through the Eucharist and other sacraments are liturgy.

Private Worship...You worship God in your own time.You can also have private worship if you talk one-on-one time with the preist,praying to God. A prayer you have in your head or out loud but you don't share it with anyone except God.A silent respond to God by prayer.

Service.....is when there is a mass or when you have one of the sacraments, or when the priest visits the poor or sick.Helping others less fortunate.

The Naughtiest Girl                        Chapter 2          Story 1

For the rest of the time Elizabeth could have at home Elizabeth tried being very naughty and also very good. "I'll see what being obedient and polite does. Maybe mother will change her mind then". So to everybody's surprise Elizabeth became the most sweet-tongued and well-mannered person. But unfortunately that had quite the wrong effect because her mother said something different! "Well, now I'm not so afraid of sending you to school now. I thought you would be so unhappy and upset, but I now know that you could be happy". And you can guess what happened after that. Elizabeth became naughtier that ever!!! "Well, if being good makes mother think like that, I'll see what being naughty does!!!" Elizabeth emptied the ink-bottle all over the cushions in the living room and drawing room. She tore a large hole in one of the nicest curtains, with flowers and butterflies on it. She put three horrible black Dung-bugs in Miss Scott's tooth-brush mug, and squeezed the super glue into the end of Miss Scott's shoes!"Well all this makes it quit certain Elizabeth needs to go to school!" said Miss Scott as she tried to get her feet out of the sticky shoes. "And yet she can be so sweet and nice when she likes."
Elizabeth's trunk was packed and ready to go on a carriage. She had two spare pairs of stockings, dresses, shoes, and she had one thick jacket for when it was raining. She had a tuck-box too, and inside was a big currant cake, a box of chocolates, a tin of toffee, a jam sandwich, and a tin of shortbread.
Elizabeth put on her uniform of Whyteleafe (her boarding school) It was very neat, and she looked nice in it. But then again, Elizabeth looked nice in anything! "My goodness! You really do look like a school girl!" Elizabeth's mum kissed her daughter goodbye. "See you at half-term." "No mum" Elizabeth replied. "I'll be so naughty, that they'll send me right back so I'll be home a long time before that!

Oscar is my black cockershon puppy. A cockershon is a cross between a cockerspaniel and a bichon frise breed. He has a white strip on his tummy and has a red collar. He sleeps in his black cage with his soft white basket and black bubble blanket. He has 2 ID tags and a fluffy tail. He has black, soft, fluffy, curly hair that blows in the breeze. Dear Mum,

Yogi bear, Dora, Bob the builder and I were playing in the yard and we all agreed we would go see the monkeys down the road and be back in half an hour. After seeing the monkeys we choose to take the long way home, behind the back alleyway. We could not help but see the big, old willow tree in the corner of an old demolished police station. The trre seemed to have a ladder leaning againest it so we all dropped our school bags and started playing on the long branches. We saw an old man walk out the demolished building with a big axe swinging at his feet. We tried running away but the back of our pants were stuck to the tree with Hug Me Glue. So we quickly unzipped our pants and ran back home making sure we did'nt take any more short-cuts or run into anymore strange people.

I am to scared to talk to you but I was at like a frankenstine house I climbed a tree and sat down in it there was glue on the bottom so I acsadently sat on it and then I scared the birds away so then this monster came out the door and wonderd where the birds were then he got a ladder and climbed up I was so scared that my pants came off and they cost 70 dollas lucky I still have my underpants on with 11 holes in them I hope you are not to angry witt me.

This week we started to do collages.

We had a choice to make one of landscapes or people. the first step of the activity we had to rip small pecies of colloured paper. then we had to plan a collage art and how we would set it out. It was cool to see lots of different people with lots of different ideas for their art. I , myself did Bob the Builder and then I chose what colours I needed. I ended up usuing the colours yellow, blue, skin colour, light blue, orange and white. It was really fun doing collages and I hope we do it again sometime.

The Twits are a married couple that play nasty tricks on each other.
the first trick that is played is by Mrs Twit who places her glass eye in the bottom of Mr Twits beer.
so to get Mrs Twit back Mr Twit places a big fat frog in Mrs Twits bed while Mrs Twit is in the bathroom. The fat frog slithers up her legs while Mrs Twit prances out her bed and that night sleeps on the couch. The next day when Mrs Twit serves Mr Twits Lunch she sneaks some worms in the spaggetti she had caught in the garden that very day. To get Mrs Twit back Mr Twit adds a small block to her walking stick each night in the morning Mrs Twit realizes she was getting smaller and Mr Twit said it was a diesease that she had the shrieks and would have to get stretched in the next week to cure it.

We have only read 1/4 of the book so we will keep you in touch of what is happening in the book.

The Horrifing 6.3

On Tuesday 22nd of March a horrifing earthquake 6.3 5km deep hit Christchurch .There were hundereds of people who died and lots of buildings crashed to there knees.The Cathedral 110 years old, It's head fell off.Cracks ripped through the ground.The ground ripped into little mountains,people were crying. The rescuers ripped threw the rubble while mums and dads were racing to schools to get their sons and daughters.Peoples TV's crashed to the ground. People lost their loved ones some people had homes and some people were homeless.People worked together to make Communities. OLA was working together to take out all the silt and clean up the classes and fix the broken bricks.

HAPPY TO BE BACK AT SCHOOL!

Some people were more excited than others to be at school.

The Guard Dog

Everything was silent in the household of the Ryan-Mcginnesses and then a tremour struckand everything shifted from left to right.I heard my dog howl and the windows shattering.I heard my dog pounce up the stairs to my mum and dad. Her next stop-off was in the lounge where my brother would be watching TV.She then would come down to my room and jump on my bed and make sure I was still alive she then would growl at the gas can that would shatter againest the bricks and the stones that would flicker againest the walls. I hit my alarm as a "beeb beeb" went off , it was 9:59but I did'nt care and went back to sleep.

Kupe and the discovery of Aotearoa

There once lived a man called Kupe who lived in Hawaiiki. He had a cousin Hoturapa who lived there too. A man that also lived there named Toto was a master at canoe making and he made two boats Aotea and Matahoroa. One sunny day Kupe told Hoturapa to go fishing with him and Hoturapa agreed. When they were fishing Kupe's line got caught and he told Hotorapa to dive down and cut the fishing line and when Hotorapa under Kupe cut the anchor and rowed away furiously. He left poor Hotorapa in the salty sea to drown. When Kupe got back Hoturapas family was suspicious .Two or three days later Kupe stole a canoe that Hoturapa had owned and loaded it up and his family set sail away from Hawaiiki .When they were far away from Hawaiiki Kupe's wife saw the islands of New Zealand which appeared to be land lying beneath a long white cloud. Because of this they named the islands Aotearoa land of the long white cloud. As Kupe and his crew were sailing along the coast of the new land they disturbed a giant octopus who was hiding in a coastal cave. Terrified at the sight of humans the octopus grabbed the canoe and Kupe knew what he had to do to survive so he chucked out a water gorge thinking it was a human the octopus untangled it's sticky tentacles and went to attack the water gorge. Then Kupe stabbed the beast in the head with an axe. Kupe sailed along the islands and cut them apart it took a long time but he did it. They all went back to Hawaiiki and told people about the long, tough and scary journey but he himself said he wouldn't be returning. And that was the discovery of Aotearoa.

We have approval to open for our students on Thursday, 10th March 2011, at 9.00 a.m. 
The staff have met today and will again tomorrow  to ensure that we have everything in place  to ensure we cater for your children's needs in the best way possible.

The staff will be attending the Ash Wednesday Mass at 8.30am at Our Lady of the Assumption, we invite you to join us if you are able.

New: OLA Parent Wiki - we have started a wiki as a communication tool for you – click on the title OLA  Parent Wiki to access the page, join the wiki and reply to the discussion posts - we want to hear from you!
Access:Access to school is restricted to Wyn St and Sparks Rd - there will be no access from Hoon Hay Rd until the brickwork at the end of Room 3 is fixed. This could be some time.

We will still provide a Road Patrol Team on Hoon Hay Rd but children and parents will need to walk around the BP to the gate on Sparks Rd, or down Maryhill Ave and through the Wyn Street gate to access the school.

Water:Please ensure that your child comes to school with boiled water in a clearly named container. The water fountains are out of bounds and have been decommissioned until the Boil Water Notice is lifted.  Teachers will ensure that the water containers are taken home each day.  We will have spare safe drinking water on site.

Collection of Bags:Should you wish to collect your child's schoolbag / lunch box before Thursday - feel free to come in on Wednesday morning after 9.30 - adults are allowed on site but we cannot have children on site until Thursday.

Tea/ Coffee: There will be tea and coffee available for all parents in the hall on Thursday from 9.00 a.m. - please join us. We are looking forward to seeing you all and coming together as a school community once again.


In order for us to get a better understanding of how our school families have been affected by this disaster we have a very short survey for you to complete. It is important that the school has a clear understanding of the issues that are affecting each individual family and students so that we can provide the best care possible. We will use this information to update the Helping Hands Database - which has already been in action over the last few days.

It would be appreciated if all school families could complete this survey by Thursday 10th of March if possible. Please click the link below. If you are unable to complete the survey online and believe there is information we need to know in regard to your family or another family, please talk to me or to your classroom teacher when we return to school on Thursday.

Earthquake Recount by Isabella B

Earthquake!!!!!!!!

It was 12:50 and I was having my lunch with my friends I looked at my watch 0.58, 0.59, 12:51. I waited about three seconds and then my stomach clenched. I felt the ground shaking. I got down into a turtle wondering what would happen next. Suddenly I heard the sound of everybody running towards the court. I got up and saw the sight of terrified faces everywhere, worried faces just getting worse. I felt a tear roll down my face at the thought of my family being hurt and not seeing them again. Everyone was shocked at the same thought as was the whole of Christchurch. It took a long time for parents to arrive but Mr Grants guitar was a much needed distraction. It must have been really hard for the teachers; they had to look after us while not knowing if their own families were safe. Eventually I saw my dad in his car. I felt so relieved he was safe and he said Mum would be OK but I could tell by his voice he didn't really know. Four hours later mum came home and we were all together again. I felt so happy I couldn't even say how happy I was. Now a week later I still feel lucky but I still think about the other people that aren't as lucky as me.

Update: O.L.A. is structurally sound.

OLA has received a green sticker. The structural engineers have assessed the main block today and have issued a green sticker to say it is structurally sound.

Of course there are a few repairs that need to be done but these are not urgent nor are they safety issues. The wall (end of room 3) will remain taped off until it is fixed.

This is a positive step forward for us.

We are still governed by the Civil Defence Emergency Status and therefore the school grounds and buildings remain closed to all until this is lifted. Watch for updates on this website.

School will remain closed until further notice.

Earthquake Recount by Phoebe R

This is my recount of the 6.3 Earthquake on Feb 22nd. I was just heading into the girls toilets when the earthquake struck; I was very frightened and started screaming. I dropped to the turtle position till it was over. I then headed to the grass where I met with my friends and my class to see if they were all ok. I was feeling really sad because I thought that no one would come to see if I was alright, but my cousin came to check on me and Tristan because Mum was stuck in traffic trying to get to us. I couldn't believe our school had lots of liquefaction and had big cracks in the court. When we got home we had stuff all over the floor and lots of plaster off our ceiling. Nana, Poppa and Aunty Lisa came to check we were ok because they couldn't contact us because we had no power or water. We went over to their house. I am so happy that none of my family or friends was hurt but I am very sad for those who have lost someone.

Even though we are listed in the paper as having severe damage please note: We have received a yellow sticker - this means further assessment is necessary - We have had an initial assessment of the buildings. Rms 11, 1, 2, 8, 9 and 10 are in good condition with no damage. We are now awaiting a full structural assessment of the main block before we can move forward. As soon as we know anymore we will post it on the website.
